Speaking · Part 1
Home & Accommodation — Speaking Part 1
Answer naturally in 2–4 sentences. Do not try to force every target word into one answer.
Target vocabulary: house, apartment, room, bedroom, bathroom, kitchen, window
- Do you live in a house or an apartment?
- Which room in your home do you spend the most time in?
- What do you like about your bedroom?
- Would you prefer larger windows in your home? Why?
- Is there anything you would like to change about your kitchen or bathroom?
IELTS strategy & language tips
- Give a direct answer first, then add one reason or detail.
- Use apartment/flat accurately: apartment is especially common in American English; flat is common in British English.
- Upgrade simple descriptions with natural collocations such as spacious room, large window and modern kitchen.
Show model language
I live in an apartment in a busy part of the city. My favourite room is my bedroom because it has a large window and gets plenty of natural light.
Speaking · Part 2
Describe a Room — Speaking Part 2
Describe a room in your house or apartment that you enjoy spending time in. You should say where the room is, what it looks like, what you usually do there, and explain why you like spending time there.
Target vocabulary: house, apartment, room, window, wall, floor, bedroom, kitchen
- Preparation idea: note 4–6 keywords rather than writing full sentences.
- Try to mention physical features naturally, such as the window, walls or floor.
IELTS strategy & language tips
- Organize the talk as place → appearance → activities → reason.
- Use linking language such as what I like most is…, another thing I enjoy is…, and overall….
Show model language
The room I spend the most time in is my bedroom. It is not very large, but it feels comfortable because the walls are light-coloured and there is a wide window beside my desk. I usually read or work there in the evening, and I like it because it is quiet and private.
Writing · Writing Task 1
Apartment Problem — General Training Writing Task 1
You are renting an apartment and several problems need to be repaired. Write a letter to your landlord. In your letter, describe the problems, explain how they affect you, and say what you would like the landlord to do.
Target vocabulary: apartment, bathroom, door, kitchen, window, floor, wall
- Plan three clear bullet-point paragraphs before writing.
- Possible problems: a broken bathroom door, a kitchen window that will not close, or damage to the floor.
IELTS strategy & language tips
- Keep the tone appropriately polite and direct.
- Use precise location language: in the bathroom, beside the kitchen window, on the floor near the door.
Show model language
Dear Mr Rahman, I am writing to report several maintenance problems in the apartment I rent from you. The bathroom door does not close properly, and the kitchen window is also damaged. In addition, part of the floor near the entrance has become loose. I would be grateful if you could arrange repairs as soon as possible.

Reading passage
Healthy Home Design
Modern homes are often designed to use natural light and fresh air more efficiently. Large windows can reduce the need for artificial lighting during the day, while carefully positioned doors and windows can improve ventilation.
In small apartments, designers may remove an unnecessary wall to create a larger open-plan room. Kitchens and bathrooms, however, still need practical surfaces that are easy to clean, especially the floor and areas near water.
Target vocabulary: home, window, door, wall, room, apartment, kitchen, bathroom, floor
- Why can large windows reduce the need for artificial lighting?
- What can improve ventilation in a home?
- Why might a designer remove a wall in a small apartment?
- Which two rooms are mentioned as needing easy-to-clean surfaces?
IELTS strategy & language tips
- Locate the keyword in the question, then look for the same idea expressed in the passage.
- Do not assume information that the passage does not state.
Check answers
- Because they allow more natural light into the home.
- Carefully positioned doors and windows.
- To create a larger open-plan room.
- The kitchen and bathroom.
