The King Who Tried to Catch a Rainbow

Read the story and select highlighted words to explore their meanings.

Once upon a time, a king announced an impossible challenge: "Whoever catches a rainbow will win a golden crown!" His kingdom went wild. But his royal magician tried to the challenge, using confusing explanations to hide the truth that a rainbow could not be caught.

The king's assistant gave the announcement a reading. He rushed through it without care or enthusiasm, as if he simply wanted to finish the task.

Then came Bruno, a knight who refused to obey the king's orders. "I will not chase a rainbow!" he shouted. No command, threat, or punishment could make the stubborn knight cooperate.

The king was equally . He refused to compromise or change his decision. "The rainbow must be caught!" he insisted, even when everyone explained why it was impossible.

A wise traveler entered the palace. Unlike the noisy crowd, she was . She spoke only three words: "Rainbows cannot stay." Her brief reply contained more wisdom than the king's long speeches.

The magician responded with an explanation about light waves, atmospheric refraction, and optical physics. His specialized knowledge was so difficult that only a few trained scholars understood it.

Just then, a magnificent rainbow appeared outside the palace. Everyone rushed toward it, but within minutes, it vanished. Its beauty was —wonderful but short-lived, lasting only a fleeting moment.

The king's mood turned . One moment he laughed, the next he shouted, and moments later he offered everyone a reward. His sudden, unpredictable changes left the entire court bewildered.

Meanwhile, the royal painter was about every detail. He examined each color carefully, rejected the slightest mistake, and refused to finish until his painting was nearly perfect.

Finally, Bruno admitted that the traveler had been right. Instead of punishing the knight for disobedience, the king became . He generously forgave Bruno, praised the traveler, and even offered to share the golden crown.

That evening, the traveler smiled and told the court, "Remember today's rainbow. The magician tried to the truth by making it unclear. The assistant was , doing his duty carelessly. Bruno was because he resisted orders, while the king was because he refused to compromise. I was because I used very few words. The magician's explanation was because only specialists could understand it. The rainbow was because it disappeared so quickly. The king was because his mood changed without warning. The painter was because he demanded perfection. And in the end, the king was because he forgave generously."

The king looked at the empty sky and laughed. "I tried to catch something that could never stay, but I learned ten lessons that will!"

And from that day forward, whenever a rainbow appeared, the people remembered the stubborn knight, the unpredictable king, the perfectionist painter, and the wise traveler. The rainbow disappeared in minutes, but its lessons remained.
